Another satisfied patient with Dr. Juan Carlos Mejia

September 23, 2008

Ever since I started posting information about my Medellin Dentist, Dr. Juan Carlos Mejia, my personal in box has been flooded with inquiries about his services, prices, is he a well trained dentist, is it safe to visit Medellin, can I really save money, is his clinic sterile, does he use the latest technology, can I trust my dental requirements with him, does he do laser whitening?

It became somewhat overwhelming so I started forwarding my e-mails directly to him for responses. I don’t know the procedures for a crown replacement or what it would cost.  I do not know how many hours a dental implant takes or the procedure for replacing an amalgam filling with a white filling.

What I do know is that every single patient that I have ever referred to Dr. Mejia has raved about his services and professionalism.  Many have  sent me e-mails about how much money they saved, even after considering the cost of their airfare, hotels, meals and more. Better than 90% have commented on what a nice guy he is and how they can not believe they have his personal cell phone number or how quickly he responds to their e-mails.  The best one was one guy who told me about using his web cam to show a tooth problem on line with Dr. Mejia and the Dr. being able to give him an online response and estimated cost for the procedure.

Comments like;

- DR. Mejia did a dental implant for me for $450 that my dentist in the US quoted me $1,800 for;

_I had 3 root canals that my dentist in the US quoted me $4,500.  Dr. Mejia did them for less than $1,200;

-I am from England where there are the worst Dentist in the world.  Dr. Mejia fixed two crowns and re-filled 3 amalgam cavaties whith white fillers and now my teeth look great.

-He saw me on a Saturday morning because I only had the weekend in Medellin.  My dentist in the US was probably on the golf course.  Imagine???

Well, when you keep getting glowing feedback from your constituents like this guy is getting, you tend to want to keep promoting him.

One other interesting fact:  His Tutorial on Cosmetic Dentistry is the second highest read post on this site.  Feria de Las Flores beat him out, but not by much.

Need some high quality low cost dentistry?  Might want to consider a visit to Medellin.  Enjoy the wonderful climate, the friendly people, the beautiful girls, get a little required dental services performed and pay for the cost of your visit with your savings and then some!

Yes, he and his staff speak English.  He can explain what is required in English. He can explain the procedures in English….but he will bill you in pesos….!

TYPES OF TEETH WHITENING

How white can your teeth become?

How white your teeth can become from bleaching and whitening is a common question with a very subjective answer. Some whitening procedures claim they can whiten your teeth by up to nine shades, but that is highly unlikely. Just a change of two or three shades will make a significant difference in just about anyone’s smile. There is no one standard system in the dental field to measure and determine tooth color. The most often heard about, however, is the Vita shade guide. This guide divides tooth color into four basic shade ranges:
A (reddish brown)

B (reddish yellow)
C (gray)
D (reddish gray).
In the A range there are five levels of darkness. Ranges B, C and D, each have four levels. Not all of your teeth are the same natural color. Usually your eye teeth tend to be darker than the others, your front teeth are typically the whitest, and molars tend to be a shade between the two. The goal for everyone is to achieve their individual optimum whiteness while still looking natural. During your first consultation for tooth whitening, your dentist will go over what you personally can expect for your specific smile. How white teeth will become from a given procedure will vary from person to person. The structure of your teeth and the type of procedure implemented will affect the outcome.

What causes discoloration of the teeth?

Teeth enamel discoloration can be caused by staining, aging, or chemical damage to teeth. Some of the more common causes of teeth discoloration are medications, coffee, tea or cigarettes.  People who drink significant amounts of cola soft drinks can experience similar staining.

Aside from staining, there are other factors that can affect the color of an individual’s teeth. Genetics can play a role. Some people have naturally brighter enamel than others. Disease can also be a factor and certain medications can cause a discoloration of the teeth. If you suspect that there is an underlying medical cause for your teeth discoloration, be sure to inform your cosmetic dentist.

Pros and Cons of Teeth Whitening

Advantages:

People typically have their teeth whitened to improve their appearance. Whiter teeth are associated with beauty and a healthier lifestyle. When people have a brighter smile, they tend to smile more often and are less self-conscious.

In addition, a whiter smile tends to minimize the appearance of facial wrinkles, giving way to a more youthful and energetic appearance.

Finally, a whiter smile gives people to whom you are speaking a place to focus on and gives you a friendlier appearance.

Disadvantages:

Although bleaching is very effective, there can be short term disadvantages, such as sore gums or teeth from the bleach. This disappears when bleach use is discontinued. Some individuals are more chemically sensitive. If you are one of them, inform your cosmetic dentist so that you can be tested for sensitivity to the solution.

Research indicates that bleaching is completely effective in more than 78% of people. In cases of serious teeth discoloration, bleaching may not be the best choice. Veneers or crowns may be the superior choice. Bleaching is usually the first solution to try due to its lower cost.

Some people experience discomfort from wearing the mouth tray. This typically goes away in short order, but if you suspect that there is a problem with the fit of your mouth tray, call your dentist’s office. They can often make small adjustments that will minimize or eliminate the problem.

TYPES OF TEETH WHITENING

There are a few teeth whitening procedures available that correct discoloration of the teeth by removing the brown and yellow staining. While each work effectively, there are advantages and disadvantages to each procedure dependent upon your objectives and commitment to the processes. The type of procedures available should be discussed with your cosmetic dentist, and a

LASER BLEACHING (In-Office)

Using a laser with a whitening gel, this is an in-office bleaching system.

The translucent bleaching gel is applied to the teeth and a laser light is used to activate the crystals to absorb the energy from the light and penetrate the teeth enamel to increase the lightening effect on the teeth. The length of time in the cosmetic dentist’s chair depends on the degree of discoloration you have.

Advantage: One visit is usually all it takes for a bright smile.

Disadvantage: The sudden change of color is likely to be noticed by those around you immediately.

CUSTOM FIT TRAY BLEACHING (In-Home)

A custom fitted tray is worn over your teeth. A small amount of the bleaching gel is placed in the tray and worn for a brief amount of time each day. This is a common technique because it’s easy to use and costs less. Impressions are taken of your mouth and a thin custom made plastic tray is made which you take home and wear for about one to two hours per day. While some results may be seen in a couple days, it usually takes one to two weeks to see the full whitening of your teeth. This procedure is sometimes used in conjunction with the in-office laser bleaching if you have severe discoloration (dark grey or purple) or internal teeth staining.

Advantage: A gradual whitening of your teeth over time will be less noticeable to others that you’re undergoing this procedure..

“Medellin is considered one of the most dangerous cities in the world”

September 11, 2008

Who is this person?  Jiang Yuxia of the China View newspaper:

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2008-09/10/content_9892506.htm

“ Medellin is considered one of the most dangerous cities in the world, as drug cartels and deals are rampant there. “

Does she live in Medellin?  I think not!

Has she ever set foot in Medellin?  I seriously doubt it!

Has she checked her facts about homocide rates in major metropolitan areas of the world lately?  Does not seem so!

Is this rampant, negligent news reporting at it’s worst? Probably so!

Was she bored and trying to find something to enter into her computer one morning?  Well, you can answer that one.

What a completely stupid generalization to make about a country she knows nothing about. Too bad her tabloid does not allow for comments or rebutals.  But then again, it is China!

BTW-Have you read much lately about how much China is persecuting the Tibetans?  Ask Ms. Yuxia to print an article about that next week!

I will reiterate.  I have never felt so safe in any city in the world as I do in Medellin Colombia.  74 countries and 480 cities I have been blessed to visit.

The homocide rate is lower here than in Philadelphis, Washington DC, New Orleans and Miami.

The people here love their President and may very well vote him into an unheard of third term in office.

Ms. Yuxia, get a visa and visit Medellin sometime. You may never go home!

Are you running for office or something?

What an absurd statement to make!

Tiger Paw Hostel in Medellin-A better idea?

September 8, 2008

These guys get it!

A hostel, is a hostel is a hostel until you start adding location, location, location and amenities, a full service restaurant and Medellin sports bar where you can watch your favorite College or NFL game while you are traveling in Medellin Colombia.

Brian, the owner and an avid Clemson Tiger fan, has pulled out all the stops to make this the ultimate hostel to stay at when you visit Medellin Colombia.

Location? Many Medellin Hostels advertise “Within walking distance or a short cab ride from Parque Lleras” At the Tiger Paw when you step foot outside the front door, you are “in Parque Lleras”

Many Medellin Hostels advertise full service amenities but few offer a full service restaurant or an on site sports bar.

Two eggs, ham and cheese beeakfast with toast maybe, but not many will offer Fettucini Alfredo, chicken wings, black bean nachos or “my favorite” chicken salad sandwiches”!

Great lounge and sports bar area with multiple LCD TV’s playing a host of local Futball and American footlball games; Cheap, cold beer at $1.00 or less; Full service restaurant featuring American cuisine and snacks; pool table, outdoor tiki torches and music genre from the 80’s 90’s and beyond…. Sign me up!

The Tiger Paw Hostel had their “soft opening” of their restaurant and sports bar last Thursday.  There were maybe 25-40 people mingling about, watching the first football game of the season, chatting, munching on their “to die for” bruschetta made by their on site chef Richard, followed by a medley of local veggies and seasoned meats.  Tiki torches outside to signal the grand opening of the Lions Den Restaurant and Tiger Paw Sports Bar…..It just could not have been more tranquil.

Side note:  A friend called me from Parque Lleras tonight.  He said had had a group of friends that wanted to watch Sunday Night Football but did not want to go all the way out to Calle Ochenta to watch it.  I suggested the Tiger Paw. They called me with a toast for my recommendation. Unfortunately, I am working/writing and can’t enjoy the game with them.  Such is the life!
