Well, it is confirmed. I read an article in the paper the other day that confirmed the new support structures for this years Los Alumbrados in Medellin Colombia are designed to be permamnet in nature.

This means there will be a permanent installation of water fountains and lights every evening crossing the river from downtown to the bridge at Calle 33.

This years Los Alumbrados theme is of course designed to be a water theme and the Alcalde has promosed it to be the grandest in history.

Again, if you plan to visit Medellin between December 1st-January 15th to view this annual spectacle, make your reservations early as places fill up fast. Also expect to pay a 20-30% premium on rooms and apartments during this annual event.

This will be my 4th Los Alumbrados and I am more amazed ever year at what an overwhelming amout of effort goes into this incredible Christmas Lighting event.

i HAVE been coming to Medellin for that last 3 years and I have to say that all the hostels in the area have been good to me except Black Sheep and DO NOT GO TO CASA DEL SOL. Blacksheep workers are very nice but they aren{t good with keeping organized.

What I mean by that is that they do not properly keep track of your accumulated bill. I ended up overpaying 30, 000 Colombian pesos because they felt that what the computer says is correct. But everything else about Blacksheep was ok.

However, Casa Del Sol is ridiculous. I do understand that people drink beer through the day but an old lady was picking up her dress mooning people?
And there is some other guy, Louis or Andres, but he was prancing around in some Freddie Mercury Queen outfit and I have a 6 year old daughter that saw all of that.

If THEY advertised that it were an adult hostel, then that is ok but i wouldnt have gone there because I am a devoted righteous mother and i did not deserve to deal with that.

Bye,

A few more updates for the interested traveler:

No self respecting Paisa eats an Arepa with a knife and fork. They pick it up to eat it no matter what may be stuffed in the middle.

For those of you who find the Arepa to be a little bland or difficult to stomach, ask for the Arepa con Chocolo. It will be more like the texture of a pancake and slightly sweet as well.

Almost every Paisa you meet will have a cell phone. Not many will have any credits or minutes to make calls. They are likely to call you collect (let it ring once and expect you to call them back on your nickle) even though they are the ones needing to speak to you about something.
